Transfer of
2740 red hands to
the government to stop the use of child soldiers!
From
6. to 15. of January 2010, 537 students of several primary schools from
our
region, visited the German military cemetery. They participated in the
interactive exhibition `Child Solders´ and got a guidance
tour on the German
military cemetery. On this cemetery 1375 child soldiers are buried, who
have
died during the WOII. These child soldiers were indicated with a red
hand at
their grave.
After the
exhibition, all students stamped a red hand onto a piece of
paper to that show that the usage of child soldiers must stop! 632
hands have
been gathered by these children. We also gathered red hands in Venray
on the
13. of July, the 1375 red hands of the child soldiers who are buried on
the
German military cemetery in Ysselsteyn and of several groups which have
sent us
the collected red hands. This brings it to the number of 2740 hands!
On the 12.
of February 2010, all these hands will be handed over to a
Member of the Dutch Parliament (PvdA) Lia Roefs and a member of the
German
Paliament (Abgeordneter der Landestages von Nordrhein-Westfalen) sir
Norbert
Killewald (SPD). The transfer is accompanied in a theatrical and
musical manner
by primary school children.
All over the
world several projects/action are organised to collect red
hands. These red hands will be handed over annually on the 12. of
February
(international saves hand Day) to the governments of different
countries or to
the UN. We all want to move the governments to do something about the
protocol
child soldiers and that the fight against the use of child soldiers
gets the
highest priority.
We want
everyone to continue this action! Organise a red hand action and
collect as many red hands as possible. We gladly will help you further
with the
organisation, if you like. You can send us the collected hands, so that
we can
hand over even more red hands next year!
With thanks
to Thetru Venray for making and paying the red hands which
stood at the graves of the child soldiers on our cemetery during the
exhibition.

1400 Red hands on the German
military cemetery
From
18th December 2009 till 17th January 2010 you’ll see almost
1400 red hands on
the German military cemetery in Ysselsteyn. At each grave of a child
soldier (a
soldier under 18 years old) a red hand is placed.
They have died during the 2nd World War as a child soldier. A few of
them have
died on their 18th anniversary. At a number of unknown soldiers there
is also
placed a red hand. There are 166 unknown soldiers, of which we know for
certain
that they died as child soldiers. For this reason graves of the unknown
soldiers have been randomly selected and a red hand has been placed.
The red hands have a symbolic meaning: stop the use of child soldiers!
These 1400 red hands will play an important role at the hand transfer
on 12
February 2010. This project belongs to the exhibition ‘child
soldiers’ at the
YMC, which will be visited by school classes from the 6th till the 15th
of
January 2010.

June,

July, 1 2007: The Peacefactory
In
2007
we had 3 jubilees. Because of that the Peacefactory (http://www.vredeseducatie.nl/) was in
Ysselsteyn!
In
the peace
factory stands 15
machines with dozens of apparatuss. The visitors produce peace and
freedom. With all kinds of tool they discover that tolerance has
borders, that freedom is bound to rules, that conflicts can be solved
in several manners. The metaphor of the factory involves an active
attitude. The visitors make choices, carry out tasks and review their
opinion. In pairs they fill in a route card. The factory environment is
supported with slightly - and sound impact. In the peace factory the
link is laid between war and peace, between past and present. But
gradually the visitors will found out that the exposition in fact
concerning them itself, concern own standards, attitude and behaviour.

Exchange
project Metzo college, Doetinchem & Hohe Giethorst, Bocholt
In the end of may there was a
exchange
project between Dutch an German students at the YMC. The exchange
existed among
meeting each other, an eyewitness of the 2nd World War, peace rally and
at the
end a multi-coulered evening!
Pleasure,
learning and experience held a
prominent place.
These
judgements
are
originating from the Dutch student of the Metzo College, Doetinchem:
*
Open yourself
for somebody else. Then there is a lot in yourself what you can change.
* Let the
past rest. (Don’t begin about it to German people)
* Say "STOP" to war.
* Take the people who they are. Love each person. Then you’ll
live
well.
*
Say "no"
against war and against discrimination.
* Don’t say "I can’t do it", but say "I will try".
* Don’t say “I” but say "We".
* Help one by one for a better world.
*
Differently"
can also be nice.
* Become 1 world.
* Ysselsteyn meant al lot for me. Peace and respect with other
countries.
* Live from day to day, not in a planning.
*
Don’t give
German people prejudice.
* First think about the war, befor you say something about it. |

give you by the means of photos
and stories
a vivid and personal impression of being able to forgive and to
reconcile. People
who experienced and survived tremendousness because of violence tell us
their
stories. Inside themselves they feel the need to forgive and to

20th
of October - 13th
of December
2005:
Exhibition 'Hallo
Nachbar!...Dag buurvrouw!'
42 drawings show the relation between the Netherlands and Germany. Dutch and
German
artists do everything to portray the prejudices in their cartoons: Like
the
thick fat Mercedes-driving and leather-trousers wearing German who
claims the
property of the North sea beach. And
the
smoking Misses Antje on a clog who throws watery tomatoes across the
border.
The German Embassy in the Netherlands took
together with the caricature expert Prof. Dr. Walther Keim the
initiative to
make this exhibition.
We showed a copy of the original exhibition.

14th
February - 11th March 2005: Exhibition "child with
luggage"
This colorful touring exhibition tells about the burden of war, which
children
have to carry on in the course of their life: their luggage. Obviously,
this can
only be memories, but also quite often emotions, which have a profound
impact
on the life of the children; fear, distrust, insecurity and loneliness.
During this exhibition children, who grew up during the 2nd
World
War, get the opportunity to speak up. Being the children of Jews they
had
totally different experiences than children whose parents were in the
NSB (the
Dutch Nazi movement) or who were involved in the resistance.
Experiences made by children during the war leave their marks until
today.
Even nowadays children are affected by war and thus, carry luggage.
The exhibition, alongside with the graphic material, is supposed to
show
children that growing up during any war has specific consequences for
one's
life.
"Children with luggage" is property of the "Museum
for
Resistance
in Southholland".

6th
of March - 7th of April
2004:Exhibition 'Oppression
and
Liberation'
Service denier and Deserters in the Third Empire
'Oppression and Liberation' is an exhibition of photo's and
letter-fragments of
service denier and deserters during the time of Hitler's Third Empire.
They
declined war and mostly had to pay for this choice with their lives.
About ten staff members of the Anti-War Museum in Berlin started in
1989 a
search for forgotten history of people who said 'No' to war and
violence
in very
difficult situations. From family albums they arranged an impressive
exhibition
of photo's and fragments of letters which tell us about the motivation
to refuse the service.

De
GEWELDIG Express: 9th -
14th of March 2003
The
Express bus is 12 meter long and has a unique exposition about
useless
violence, fighting and the biggest treasures of the world. It's not an
exposition
in a traditional way. It's more a sort of game circuit where the
different
themes are used in an exiting way. The 'Express' is made by the Peace
Education
Projects in Utrecht for
children and
youth of at least 10 years old.
By using a map the children will go through the bus and
answer the
questions. They will be motivated to seek for answers and to give their
own
opinion.
The visitors will realize that things that look right don't necessarily
have to
be right. They will learn the difference between a fact and a meaning.
They
will understand what a prejudice is and notice that everybody has them.
What
one person things as normal, the other thinks as strange and the other
way
around. Everybody can check how violent they are and learn how to
solve
conflicts.
The 10th till the 14th of March there were 32 school classes from
municipalities Venray, Deurne and Horst
who
visited the Express.
The groups started with a guidance over the cemetery. Further they had
to
answer the questions in the Express bus. After that
the
children could go into the Indian Tipi tent and draw something on the
big
artwork.
